Public drinking water purification systems may use a number of steps that include such things as flocculation, UV disinfection, carbon beds, water softeners, reverse osmosis, ultra filtration, deionization and chemical disinfection. But, still it is necessary for a drinking water purification system in the home. One of the reasons for the necessity is the chemical disinfection step. Most municipal drinking water purification systems use chlorine or chloramines to kill living organisms and prevent the accumulation of algae in the pipes. No one likes the way it tastes or smells and that was the initial reason that water purification for the home became popular. But, now we know that it not only tastes and smells bad, but consuming and even showering in it is bad for your health.Chlorine, itself, in gaseous form, is toxic. But, when used to disinfect, compounds called trihalomethanes or THMs are released and they are known carcinogens. In the shower, both of the gases build up and enter your blood stream. And, of course, if you drink straight from the tap, you are consuming both. Most home water purification systems remove chlorine, but only a few remove THMs.Even after going through all of the steps mentioned in the first paragraph, other chemical contaminants may also be present. A probe by the Associated Press found that public water supplies around the country are contaminated with prescription drugs, over the counter meds and hormones. Only point of use water filtration can address this issue. The facilities feel that the levels are not dangerous and that if the public were aware of the situation, they would not understand and would overreact. Well, personally I do not feel that buying drinking water purification systems is an overreaction. Scientists are only beginning to understand what trace contamination of this kind can cause over the course of one’s life. But, that’s not all. There is yet another reason that you need drinking water filtration in the kitchen. Some bacteria are resistant to chemical disinfection. Microscopic cysts build up on the public utility filters and are not removed through chlorination. If ingested, these cysts can grow and cause waterborne illnesses that can be fatal, especially to small children. A water filtration process that removes cysts includes a micron filter. Not all of them make use of this step. So, we have covered the contaminants that drinking water purification systems may add and those that are not removed, but there is one last point. Between the facility and your home are miles and miles of pipes. While traveling through, the water may become contaminated with the lead, a toxic heavy metal, because it was used to line the pipes and to construct the joints. Particularly high levels have been measured in homes with older pipes. Drinking water purification systems must make use of “ion exchange” in order to remove lead. Of course, this is not a complete explanation, but hopefully, now you know why you need that faucet filter.
